What Questions Should You Ask a Used-Car Dealer?
By CarJinga Editorial Team · September 28, 2026
A good dealer will answer these questions directly and without hesitation. Vague or evasive answers to any of these are worth treating as a warning sign.
About the car's history
- Is there a clean title, and can I see the vehicle history report?
- Has this car ever been in an accident, even a minor one?
- Was this a trade-in, a lease return, or a former rental or fleet vehicle?
- Do you have the service and maintenance records?
About the price and the deal
- Is the advertised price the full price, or are there additional dealer fees?
- Is the price negotiable, and is there any flexibility?
- Are there any current manufacturer or dealer incentives that apply?
- What's included in the out-the-door price — tax, title, registration, and any add-ons?
About the sale terms
- Is this car sold as-is, or is there any warranty coverage?
- Can I have my own independent mechanic inspect the car before I buy?
- What's your return or exchange policy, if any?
- Are there any open recalls on this VIN, and have they been addressed?
About financing
- What interest rate and loan term are you offering, and can I see the full amortization?
- Is there a discount for paying cash instead of financing through the dealership?
- Are there any prepayment penalties if I pay the loan off early?
Bring these questions in writing if it helps you stay on track during the conversation — a dealer focused on a fast close may otherwise steer you back to payment amount and away from the underlying numbers.
