How to Sell a Car Privately

By CarJinga Editorial Team · September 28, 2026

Selling privately typically nets more money than a dealer trade-in, but it does require more effort — pricing the car accurately, presenting it well, and handling the paperwork yourself.

Price it accurately from the start

Research what genuinely comparable cars are selling for in your area and price accordingly — a car priced too high sits unsold and attracts less serious interest, while a car priced too low leaves money on the table.

Take real photos and write an honest description

Clear photos from multiple angles, in good lighting, along with an honest description of the car's condition and any known issues, build buyer trust and reduce time wasted on buyers who back out once they see the car in person.

Screen buyers and meet safely

  • Communicate through a platform that verifies contact information rather than sharing personal details freely
  • Meet in a public, well-lit location for the initial viewing, and consider a police station parking lot for the final cash exchange
  • Never hand over the title or keys before payment is confirmed and cleared
  • Be cautious of buyers pushing for unusual payment methods or wanting to skip an in-person viewing entirely

Close the deal properly

Complete a bill of sale, sign over the title, and follow your state's specific requirements for the transfer. Keep a copy of every document for your own records, and notify your insurance company and, if required, your state's motor vehicle agency that the sale is complete.
