How to Sell a Car That Still Has a Loan

By CarJinga Editorial Team · September 28, 2026

Selling a car with an existing loan is common and generally straightforward — the key is understanding your exact payoff amount and how the title transfer works around an active lien.

Step 1: Get your official payoff amount

Contact your lender for the exact payoff amount, which typically includes accrued interest through a specific date and may differ from your loan statement balance. This is the amount that must be paid to release the lien before or as part of the sale.

Step 2: Understand whether you have equity or are upside down

If the sale price exceeds your payoff amount, you have equity and will receive the difference after the loan is satisfied. If you owe more than the car is worth, you're "upside down," and you'll need to cover the difference out of pocket to complete the sale — or roll it into your next purchase, which increases the amount you'll finance on a future car.

Step 3: Handle the transaction to protect both parties

Many sales with an existing lien are handled through the lender directly, or through a neutral third party like a bank, to ensure the buyer's payment goes toward the payoff and the title is released properly once the loan is satisfied. Selling to a dealer trading in your car handles this step automatically as part of the transaction.

Be upfront with buyers

If you're selling privately, tell potential buyers upfront that the car has an active loan and explain how you'll handle the payoff — this avoids confusion or a buyer backing out once they learn about it midway through the process.
