What Documents Do You Need to Buy a Car?

By CarJinga Editorial Team · September 28, 2026

Having the right documents ready before you finalize a purchase keeps the process quick and avoids a delay right when you're ready to close the deal.

What you'll typically need to bring

  • A valid driver's license
  • Proof of insurance, since most states require active coverage before you can register a vehicle
  • Proof of funds or financing — cash, a cashier's check, or your loan approval details
  • Your current vehicle's title if you're trading it in

What the seller needs to provide

  • The vehicle's title, properly signed over to you
  • A bill of sale documenting the transaction
  • An odometer disclosure statement (often part of the title or bill of sale)
  • Any applicable warranty documentation

If you're financing

Bring proof of income and identification your lender requires, along with any pre-approval paperwork if you arranged financing before shopping. If financing through the dealer, they'll handle much of this directly, but having your own pre-approval gives you a rate to compare against their offer.

After the purchase

You'll typically need the signed title and bill of sale to register the vehicle and transfer the title into your name at your state's motor vehicle agency, usually within a specific window after the purchase date.
