What Happens After You Buy a Used Car?

By CarJinga Editorial Team · September 28, 2026

The purchase itself isn't the last step — a few important tasks remain to make sure the car is properly registered, insured, and legally yours.

Insurance

Arrange insurance coverage before or immediately upon taking possession — most states require at least liability coverage to legally drive and register the vehicle, and driving even a short distance without coverage carries real risk.

Title transfer and registration

Most states require you to transfer the title and register the vehicle in your name within a specific window after purchase, often 10-30 days depending on your state. Bring the signed title, bill of sale, proof of insurance, and identification to your local motor vehicle agency.

Taxes and fees

Sales tax, title fees, and registration fees are typically due at the time you register the vehicle if they weren't already collected as part of a dealer purchase. Private-party sales usually require you to handle these directly with your state's motor vehicle agency.

Schedule any needed service

If your inspection or the seller's disclosures flagged anything — an open recall, upcoming maintenance, or minor repairs — schedule those promptly rather than letting them slip once the excitement of the purchase wears off.

Update your records

  • Add the vehicle to your insurance policy officially, not just a temporary binder
  • Update your roadside assistance or warranty provider with the new vehicle
  • Keep the bill of sale and all paperwork in a safe place for your records
